Annabel Bowden, Krishneel Sharma, and Ben Weeding flew the flag for Climate Futures at the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society (AMOS) 2025 conference in Cairns. All three team members promoted the work we do at Climate Futures, and presented well received talks that have led to new collaborations and research opportunities. The three early career researchers returned to Hobart a little chilly, but full of enthusiasm and new ideas.
Annabel presented her PhD research comparing heavy and non-heavy rainfall events in the tropics. This was very on-theme for the conference, where a lot of talks and discussions focused on our understanding of rainfall and how that understanding is being captured in new convection permitting climate models.
Krishneel shared his research on Tropical Cyclone detection and evaluating projected changes within CMIP6 climate models in one of the many tropical cyclone sessions at this year’s conference – a popular topic and very appropriate given the conference location. Ben presented work from his PhD exploring multivariate bias correction and fine scale modelling of thermal stress in Hobart’s urban environment. Both urban climate and bias correction were well represented fields this year, and this talk bridged the gap between them.
