The University of Tasmania celebrates its IPCC authors

Today our UTAS IPCC Lead Authors presented their work, just published in the IPCC’s new AR6 report, at a public event at the University of Tasmania in Hobart.

Four University of Tasmania scientists were lead authors of the IPCC Working Group II report, Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability, and were among the 270 scientists around the world who assessed over 34,000 scientific publications for the report.

We are proud that Climate Futures’ former Director and one of the Lead Authors of the report, Dr Bec Harris, was recognised for her work at this event.

The report underscores that human-induced climate change is causing dangerous and widespread disruption in nature and is affecting the lives of billions of people around the world, despite efforts to reduce the risks.  The report, available here, confirms that people and ecosystems least able to cope are being hardest hit. 

Bec Harris was a lead author of: Chapter 2, Terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems and their services and the Cross Chapter paper on Deserts, semi-arid areas and desertification.

Dr Harris’ significant contribution to this and other important climate science work was honoured at the Hobart event. Her fellow lead authors said: “We know she would love to be here to celebrate the launch of this impressive climate change report – an achievement she shares and a passion she inspired in us all. It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the untimely passing of our outstanding climate science colleague and friend.”
